In the spring of 2020, I responded to a curious craigslist ad: “Free Cabin to Whomever Can Move It.” I learned the cabin had been built in the 1930’s during the Great Depression by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) on Grand Island. It had already been moved once by a previous owner from a site that was closer to the shoreline to the rear of the property. The cabin had been cut in half and stitched back together and placed on a railroad tie and cinderblock foundation. The owner provided a demolition permit and a dumpster for the unsalvageable material. Intrigued by the unique opportunity, my husband and I spent the summer deconstructing it. The salvaged materials now sit in a storage garage awaiting a second life.
